At the center of the enchanting rolling meadows, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales through the single tree on the peak were his main associates. Day upon day, watching over his charges instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such here occasion because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a naughty plan.
Tales of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a trick on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy giggled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank continued for a few more days. However, one morning, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a lesson on honesty and the results of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was anciently.
